Mace

The mace was originally a weapon that was redesigned before it became a symbol of rank and power. On 19th March 1952, the Council of Rulers had awarded a Mace to the Legislative Council. As a result, today every state in the country has their own Mace, including institutions of higher learning. The mace is a symbol of power of the University to confer graduation degrees.

On 18th December 1998, UPSI had arranged for a Mace to be made of sterling silver (p25ag) with a thickness of 225G (gauge) and 105 cm in length.

As a symbol of grandeur, a Mace was bestowed by the Duli Yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di Pertuan Agong in conjunction with the installation of Duli Yang Maha Mulia Raja Permaisuri Perak Darul Ridzuan, Tuanku Bainun D.K., D.M.N. as the first Chancellor of UPSI, during the University’s first Convocation Ceremony on 4th December 1999.

The Mace is used during formal functions such as convocation ceremonies and special occasions chaired by the Chancellor. The Mace signifies the Chancellor’s ultimate authority as the Head of the University.

The torch, engraved on the top end of the mace signifies the ultimate role of the University as a beacon of lights that spreads knowledge throughout the region. The name of the University is engraved at the lower end of the mace in Arabic script.

The insignia of Malaysia is engraved on the head of the mace indicating that the institution is under the aegis of the Federal government. There is also an emblem to represent University’s identity and functions. At the bottom of its head, pen-carved motifs are embedded, symbolising intellectual thinking, research and the search for truth.

The body of the mace has three parts representing three levels of education -Primary, Secondary and Tertiary. These parts also represent three levels of higher education, Degree, Masters and Doctorate. There are motifs of hibiscus, the national flower of Malaysia, all over the length of the bar.

The bottom end is styled with a carving that resembles spreading clouds called ‘Batil’. It denotes that the University aspires to expand and establish itself as a knowledge powerhouse, and at the same time preserving the basic values and unshackled beliefs towards God.
